Lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common and have been estimated to occur in at least 60% of women at some stage during their lives. UTIs are approximately 50-fold more common in adult females than males because women have shorter urethras that allow bacteria to ascend into the bladder. Recurrent urinary tract infections remain challenging to treat because the main treatment option is long-term antibiotic prophylaxis; however, this poses a risk for the emergence of bacterial resistance.
Escherichia coli, the main bacteria found in recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), is now frequently resistant to several currently used antibiotic treatments making new solutions essential. Focusing on UTI, prevention became a major goal because of their recurrent nature, increasing antimicrobial resistance and medical costs. Although effective, the current management of recurrent UTIs with either repeated courses of antibiotics or low-dose, long-term antibiotic prophylaxis has side effects, such as fungal super-infection (oral or vaginal thrush) and gastrointestinal infections.

One important property of E. coli is its adherence to the host tissue. Without adhesion, the bacteria cannot infect the mucosal surface. Recent evidence suggested that ingestion of cranberries has been used for prevention of UTI. Cranberries work principally by preventing the adhesion of E.Coli to the host tissue, thus interfering with this important initial step in the infection process
Propolis is a sticky resin collected by bees. Before the queen bee lays her eggs, her nest will be free from micro-organisms because worker bees will line it with propolis. It is a natural antibiotic that inhibits many bacteria from multiplying. Bacteria can develop resistance to many pharmaceutical antibiotics but are unable to develop resistance to propolis because it is a very complex substance containing hundreds of chemical compounds which constantly vary in their natural composition. This is the strength of propolis as a powerful natural antibiotic.
Garlic Thyme contains garlic and thyme. Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties and is an excellent treatment for infections and acts as natural antibiotics, making it a wonderful remedy for bladder and urinary tract infections. The herb Thyme is said to be an effective natural remedy to ease the painful symptoms of UTIs and cystitis.
