Stress, we've all got it and are all talking about it. WHO concludes that stress is a global epidemic. It is the normal condition: unrelenting schedules, constant financial concerns, traffic jams, and those bits of annoyances or frustrations during the course of your day. These stressors have the potential to activate your stress response. This means that your body is in constant alert because our everyday lives are occupied with these stressors.

Stress can affect the following systems of the human body:

1. Musculoskeletal System: causing stress-related disorders like tension-type headache and migraine headache.

2. Respiratory System: Stress can cause rapid breathing — or hyperventilation — that can bring on a panic attack in someone prone to panic attacks.

3. Cardiovascular: Stress increases the risk for hypertension, heart attack or stroke.

4. Endocrine: Stress can lead to diabetes, especially people vulnerable to Type 2 diabetes.

5. Gastrointestinal: Stress can affect digestion, and the nutrients your intestines absorb.

6. Nervous System: Stress causes continuous activation of the nervous system which leads to wear and tear of other bodily systems.

7. Male Reproductive System: Stress can affect testosterone production, sperm production and maturation, and even cause erectile dysfunction or impotence.

8. Female Reproductive System: Stress may cause absent or irregular menstrual cycles, more painful periods, changes in the length of cycles and reduce sexual desire.

A number of things happen when the stress response is activated:

1. Your body produces the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol requires vitamins for its synthesis.

2. The fight or flight response is activated. This releases fats and carbohydrates into the blood stream. Vitamins C and B-complex are needed to break down these fats and carbohydrates.

Vitamin B aids the central nervous system to function smoothly. The body's response to stress depletes the body’s store of Vitamin B.

When stressed your body produces more free radicals. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help to protect your body against free radical damage and boost your immune system during stressful times.

Stress makes calcium difficult to absorb. Calcium is involved in the transmission of nerve signals between cells. The depletion of calcium can lead to overactive nerve cells which may be an underlying physiological basis for stress and anxiety.
